The Cabbagetown Coalition was formed as a result of the City’s decision to locate a shelter at 233 Carton Street. This project was approved in secret and unilaterally, without deliberative community consultation.

The Coalition has representatives from all of Cabbagetown’s residents’ associations and some local businesses.

Although we did not prevail at Committee of Adjustment on Feb. 26th, we are not deterred. We appreciate every one of the 87 letters of objection submitted and the six speakers for standing up. Cabbagetowners are committed to doing our fair share to relieve the stress on the poor and vulnerable, as we have done for decades, but we cannot be the only ward in our city to carry the burden of the shelter system.

We understand the need for these services, and support many already in our neighbourhood. It is our intention, however, to prevent any shelter services at 233 Carlton from opening. The last day for submitting an appeal of the Committee’s decision is March 17, 2020.

Join the mailing list to stay in touch. If you need more information please let us know. Also, the Coalition needs additional support in the areas of communication, organizing, media, outreach, fundraising, legal, website. If you can help please contact us.

We are safer, stronger, together.
